    What is Professional Tax?

Professional Tax (PT) is a direct tax levied by State Governments in India on income earned by individuals from their profession, trade, or employment.

It is governed by the respective State Professional Tax Acts, not by the central government.

Professional Tax Registration (PTRC / PTEC)

Professional Tax (PT) is a state-level tax levied on income from employment, trade, or profession. The Constitution (Article 276) allows states to levy it, up to ₹2,500 per year per person.

There are two types of registrations:

PTEC – Professional Tax Enrollment Certificate

    • For self-employed individuals / professionals (CA, CS, doctors, lawyers, consultants, freelancers, etc.).
    • They pay professional tax directly to the State Government (annually).

PTRC – Professional Tax Registration Certificate

    • For employers who deduct PT from employees’ salaries.
    • Employers must register, deduct, and deposit PT monthly/quarterly to the government.
