    What is FSSAI?

    FSSAI stands for Food Safety and Standards Authority of India.
    It is an autonomous body established under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
    It works under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India.

    Its primary role is to ensure food safety, regulate, and supervise the manufacture, storage, distribution, sale, and import of food products in India.

    Who Needs FSSAI License?

    • Wholesale or retail trade
    • Food import/export
    • Online food businesses (Zomato, Swiggy partners, cloud kitchens, etc.)

    Types of FSSAI Registration/Licenses

    • Turnover: Up to ₹12 lakhs per year
    • For small retailers, hawkers, petty manufacturers, small storage units.
    • Turnover: ₹12 lakhs – ₹20 crores per year
    • For medium-sized businesses (dairies, small/medium food processors, storage units, transporters)
    • Turnover: Above ₹20 crores per year
    • For large-scale businesses, food importers/exporters, 100% export units, airports, seaports, central government agencies

    Documents Required for FSSAI License

    Photo & ID proof of proprietor/partners/directors

    Proof of business premises (rent agreement/ownership docs)

    Food Safety Management Plan

    Details of food products to be handled

    Incorporation/partnership deed (if applicable)

    NOC from local municipality/panchayat

    Turnover proof (for deciding State or Central license)

    Validity & Renewal

    FSSAI License is issued for 1–5 years.

    Must be renewed before expiry (penalty applies if delayed).

    Steps for Getting FSSAI Food Licence in India

    Step:-1
    Identify the Type of Licence
    • Basic Registration → For petty food businesses (turnover ≤ ₹12 lakhs).
    • State Licence → For medium businesses (turnover ₹12 lakhs – ₹20 crores).
    • Central Licence → For large businesses (turnover > ₹20 crores, import/export, multi-state operations).
    Step:-2
    Register on FoSCoS Portal
    • Visit https://foscos.fssai.gov.in.
    • Sign up as a Food Business Operator (FBO).
    Step:-3
    Fill Application Form
    • Form A → For Basic Registration.
    • Form B → For State/Central Licence.
    • Provide details like business name, address, product category, and turnover.
    Step:-4
    Upload Required Documents
    • Applicant’s photo & ID proof (Aadhaar, PAN, etc.).
    • Proof of premises (ownership/rent agreement, utility bill).
    • Food Safety Management System (FSMS) plan.
    • List of proposed food products.
    • Turnover proof (for State & Central).
    • Incorporation/partnership documents (if company/firm).
    • NOC from local body/municipality (if applicable).
    Step:-5
    Pay Fees Online
    • Basic Registration → ₹100/year.
    • State Licence → ₹2,000–₹5,000/year (varies).
    • Central Licence → ₹7,500/year.
    Step:-6
    Application Review & Inspection
    • The Food Safety Officer may inspect your premises.
    • If any deficiencies are found, you must rectify them.
    Step:-7
    Grant of FSSAI Licence
    • After approval, you’ll receive an FSSAI Certificate with a 14-digit licence/registration number.
    • This number must be displayed at your premises and printed on all food labels/packages.
